Like most of the HR technology industry, Talemetry is ready to invade Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for the 2013 HR Technology Conference. This is my fourth time going, and if prior years are any indication, here are three things I've learned to make the experience better.
3 Tips for HR Tech
1. Have a Plan.
I built my schedule today after weeks of requests with partners, customers, analysts, and press. I am looking to balance all of these meetings along with some really interesting sessions.
I am pretty excited about HREvolution on Sunday so if you aren't registered and want to hang out with some super smart, passionate, good people, then make sure to check it out.
After you have enjoyed the keynotes and stopped by our Talemetry booth on the expo floor at HR Tech (it's hard to miss with the huge hanging sign), here are my top 5 must-see sessions:
- Next Gen Influencers Panel with @TrishMcFarlane and @Madtarquin
- HR and Big Data with @Josh_Bersin. Big topic. Myths. Reality. Impact.
- Effective SaaS Release Management – a critical topic for our enterprise customers.
- Recruiting Technology State of The Union with @elaineorler
- The Third Annual Candidate Experience Awards with @elaineorler and @GerryCrispin
Whatever you do, make sure you get out to the expo floor and see some of the great technology, innovations, and people in our industry. Many of our partners will be there -- and so will our competitors, so you can compare everything in one place. One thing I know for sure: some of the most passionate, knowledgeable and experienced people in our industry work for vendors. We want to help you and learn from you.
2) Be Flexible.
There is so much going on that you have to be prepared to change plans on the go. The HR Tech 2013 mobile app looks like the easiest way to get organized while you are at the show. I hope most people are on twitter by now. If you're not, you will miss out on something important at this event. Twitter is no longer optional when attending technology events. Make sure to follow @talemetry and the twitter hashtag #HRTechConf as it's usually the best place to get a sense of what's going on both on and off the event floor.
Some of the best events and relationships are built away from the expo so make sure to get out to at least one event. Jessica Miller-Merrell of Blogging4Jobs puts together this great list of HR Tech parties and events. She will even text you if you sign up with your mobile device.
3) Just Keep Moving.
As a former Ironman triathlete, I often compare HR Tech to a triathlon. Instead of Swim, Bike, Run, it's Walk. Listen.
Party (I mean...Network). You can prepare all you want before you get to the starting line. But one thing is for sure, as soon as you get there, everything will change. One of my awesome coaches once gave me this simple bit of advice: Just Keep Moving. There is so much going on at this event with sessions, keynotes, networking events, parties, briefings, demos, walking...and more walking, that you are going to get tired. It may seem obvious, but you don't have to do everything. You don't have to scream to talk to someone at a party just to be heard. Get out there and visit and even when you need to sit, find someone to talk to at the conference.
Three more reminders:
- Call home.
- Focus on the conference, not the office.
- And hydrate...with water!
This is the best event in the HR technology industry for a reason. Having a plan on what you want to learn and take away from the event, connecting with people away from the show floor, and pacing yourself will make the experience productive, memorable, and, yes...fun!
